"Food was absolutely delicious. Excellent customer service. Incredibly efficient and well organised. All staff were helpful and friendly. The drive through the Black Spur was enjoyed by all as were the bush walks on both days. I would recommend you absolutely..... Environmental Policy

Environmental Sustainability

The Cumberland strives to maintain a high level of commitment to environmental sustainability. This is demonstrated through various areas of our business, particularly Villa Day Spa. The day spa walls have been made from polystyrene; it features double glazed windows and has double insulation in the ceiling. The indoor pool is heated by the latest computerized heat pump technology, which minimizes costs and damage to the environment. The building also features low energy lighting with sensor lighting in the change rooms, which significantly reduces the amount of power used. The complex is installed with separate hot water systems for each area including one for the men's bathroom, one for the ladies bathroom and one for the day spa. This is more effective than installing one large hot water service as it uses less resources and energy and is better for the environment.

During construction of the Villa Day Spa and indoor swimming pool complex maximum care was taken to ensure a minimal amount of obstruction to the immediate environment. This included positioning the building where an absolute minimal amount of trees were obstructed or pulled down. Following the completion of the building approximately $15,000 was spent on landscaping and rejuvenating the area surrounding the complex.

The Cumberland has always adhered to environmental standards by recycling wherever possible and keeping strict procedures and policies with regards to rubbish handling. In the restaurant we use post mix orange juice rather than bottled orange juice, decreasing the amount of bottles that we use. We also have water minimisers installed on all of the showers and aim to minimize water usage wherever possible.

Water tanks are used in the gardens.

The Cumberland is also investigating the possibility of changing to heat pump technology as a way of heating rather than the standard gas heating that we currently use. This will help minimize the amount of gas used.

The Cumberland is currently investigating the possibility of becoming 'carbon neutral' – this is a policy that has been recently adopted and encouraged by the board of Lake Mountain (of which Simon Cuzens is a member).

All lighting is currently being changed to low energy fluorescent lighting, paper is shredded and a cardboard shredder is being investigated for the front office as well.

The office is currently moving to a 'paperless' environment.

How The Cumberland helps local business, community and culture.

The venue promotes local business wherever possible – the conference manager sends a 'Suggested Activities list' to all prospective corporate groups and often books golf, horse riding, ballooning, trout fishing, ski hire and winery visits in the local area. The Cumberland has partnerships with the local golf club as well as Lake Mountain.

Local trades people always have preference at The Cumberland. Product that is used for renovations is usually made locally – for example in our recent bedroom renovations nearly the entire product was sourced or made locally.
